The New Youth Council Online Showcase - Erica Jochim
Self-Portrait with Mirror (2020)
This self-portrait uses mirrors to alter the gaze of both the viewer and the subject. The visible identity markers that people observe give a limited scope of a person's identity. These visual assumptions are tied to us throughout our lives, influencing the way we are treated and are expected to act. I want to provoke how the viewer interrelates with identity and their assumptions.
Erica Jochim is a Mississauga-based painter currently attending OCAD University and completing a BFA in drawing and painting. As an artist of mixed Caribbean and European descent, her work expresses in-between spaces and multifaceted viewpoints. Her paintings are a mix of historical, contemporary, and personal influences. Inspired by the dramatic lighting and colour palette of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, she combines historical and contemporary compositions to comment on intersectional issues. She seeks to highlight the importance of looking at the world through a critical lens.
The New Youth Council Online Showcase brings together new and recent original artworks by 16 youth from Mississauga and across the GTA. Explore the works of the city's most talented youth artists.
